The film begins with the birth of Manikarnika in the ghats of Varanasi. The astrologer says her name will remembered long down history, like Ram. She is raised by the Bajirao in Bithoor and her father, Moropant.

Fast forward, a young blossoming Manu is spotted by Jhansi’s minister, Dixit-Ji, slaying a tiger. Impressed by her feat, he proposes marriage between her and the King of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao. After seeing her fighting skills and her thinking over, she agrees.

The marriage is celebrated with great pomp. A loud, spunky woman named Jhalkarbai is introduced along with her partner Puran. Manikarnika’s name officially changes to “Lakshmibai”

The Rani and Raja spend more time together and fall in love. Eventually, the Rani becomes outraged as she discovers her husband bowing her head to a British officer, Gordon. She retorts, causing a rivalry between the two.

One day, Jhalkaribai’s calf, Nandu, was stolen, prompting her to go after it and ends up getting whipped. Lakshmibai enters in and frees all the livestock that the Company has taken and claims it to be the King’s property. Lakshmibai returns Nandu and the two women are friends.

Lakshmibai learns she’s pregnant and is overjoyed. She gives birth to a boy, Damodar Rao and all is well. Sadly Damodar dies of unknown causes, prompting an adoption of a boy heir to save Jhansi, whom they rename Damodar Rao. Shortly after, Gangadhar dies.

Lakshmibai was named ruler after the king’s death, prompting his brother to commit treason. Lakshmibai refuses to enter the rituals of widowhood and goes into to enter the throne.

The British naturally are angry about this and ask her to hand over the kingdom. She doesn’t, but she walks out of the palace with a parade of women and Jhalkaribai.

After this, the British hire Sir Hugh Rose to once and for all defeat the Rani. Lakshmibai begins to train her army, especially women to fight. On the way to Jhansi, Rose hangs a girl simply because her name is Lakshmi. Meanwhile, the Mutiny is happening, resulting in the deaths of many innocent British women and children in addition to British officers.

In the first fight, they are able to stop the British’s cannons. However, at night with the help of her treacherous brother in law, the British lay siege to Jhansi, resulting in the death of Gaus-Baba. Jhalkaribai, discovering she’s pregnant, pretends to be the Queen and lets her escape, and then blew her self up and martyred herself.

Lakshmibai, torn, goes to Kalpi to regroup and is reunited with former allies, and still ready to fight. She recaptured Gwalior and led a final stand. In the end, she leads an army onto the field, leaving her son with her childhood friend and attendant, Kashi. She is shot, but before dying, runs into flames in order to avoid the desecration of her body by the British.
